Dr. Maureen Alsop 
Psychologist

BA, MS, MFA, EdS, PhD

Maureen Alsop, PhD is a registered psychologist with over 20 years of experience. Dr. Alsop is experienced in working with grief and loss, depression, anxiety, trauma and relationship counselling.  Maureen’s approach is tailored to meet the needs of the individual client.  She uses a variety of approaches including evidence based interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). She works from a strengths based practice, under the principals of trauma informed care.

She facilitates workshops in creative writing and is interested in creative therapies including writing and art therapy.

As a Psychologist in the Palm Springs School District in California, she has worked extensively with children and adolescents and is skilled in Behavioural Interventions for children.

Dr. Alsop completed her doctorate (PhD) at James Cook University studying depression and anxiety and held a fellowship at the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention at Griffith University.  She holds over twenty years of experience as a psychologist providing counselling in a variety of settings including University Counselling Centre, private practice, and as both an administrator and psychologist in public schools.

Maureen has further experience working in rural and remote North Queensland in the capacity for community development programs on mental health education for General Practitioners. She has worked in the disability sector in both community based services and public education. She is clinically experienced in assessment and the application of appropriate measures for the identification of psychological disorders using a variety of psychometric instruments for diagnosis including autism, learning disabilities, processing disorders and intellectual disabilities.

Therapeutic Interventions

Therapeutic interventions are tailored to meet individual needs, while adhering to best practice, evidence based interventions such as: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT);  Cognitive Processing Therapy; Eye Movement Desensitization Therapy (EMDR); Mindfulness; Trauma-informed, Strengths-based counseling. Assessments are conducted on an as needs basis, please enquire.

Referrals for services may be obtained through your GP, Medicare GP referral, Private, Work Cover, personal referral, Open Arms, or BUPA. Please enquire.
